1997 International Conference on Genetic Algorithms
Travel Assistance Information
With support from the Naval Center for Applied Research in Artificial
Intelligence, Naval Research Laboratory, a limited fund has been set aside
to assist students with travel expenses to ICGA-97.
Travel assistance will be granted to those students
demonstrating a need and will be limited to partial compensation for
travel expenses to the conference site. No other expenses will be
considered.
Students should have their advisor
certify their student status and that sufficient funds are not available.
Students interested in obtaining such assistance should send a letter before
May 26 describing their situation and needs to the ICGA General Chair:
Erik Goodman
GARAGe, Case Center
230 Engineering Building, MSU
East Lansing, MI 48824
USA
or fax: (517)432-0704
or email: goodman@egr.msu.edu
Important Information
To Receive Travel Assistance:
-
Make a formal request for travel assistance funds to the conference
general chair. Email is the preferred method of applying for funds.
-
Have your advisor forward a letter (email or fax) to the conference

certifying that sufficient travel funds are not available. Please have
them include their email address for verification.

Both of these must be sent by May 26, 1997.

FAQs
Q: My company won't cover my airfare. Can I apply for travel assistance?
-
Funds are limited to assisting only students.
Q: When will I receive my travel assistance grant?
-
Funds will be distributed at the conference registration desk during
conference check-in.
Q: How much money will I get?
-
Funds will be allocated based on need and distance traveled to the conference
site (East Lansing, MI USA) NOT ON COST OF TRANSPORTATION. You should make
your travel plans early so you can get the best deal. Travel grants WILL NOT
cover the full cost of the travel expenses so that as many students as
possible can receive assistance.
Q: If I request travel assistance after the deadline, will I still have a
chance of receiving funds?
-
There is a chance but it depends on how many people who met the deadline
don't use their travel grants. You will be limited how much assistance
they were offered. It pays to complete your request early!
Q: Can I ask for a waiver of registration fees?
-
No. Assistance is only for travel costs. ICGA-97 student registration fees
are among the lowest for a conference of this size. In a sense, all student
registration is already being subsidized by the conference.
